About Constance Munroe Kraus
Connie grew up in Southern California on Balboa Island. She went to Boulder, Colorado for her undergraduate studies and then on to Chicago's Northwestern University to complete her Physical Therapy degree program. In 1989, she moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and began her career as a physical therapist.
With the intensity of her new work, she soon sought an outlet to create a needed balance in her life. She enrolled in life drawing classes. Art studies opened a new world, one that she had known but had never pursued. Her extensive studies of the figure and her daily work with the human body made figure drawing a natural transition. Connie began part-time studies in the day school at Boston's School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and later at the Massachusetts College of Art. She studied drawing, painting, and printmaking.
After 10 years, including a move to Hawaii and traveling abroad, Connie returned home to Southern California where she now lives. Here she began to pursue painting with a passion. Connie's art foundation is through the instruction of Roger Armstrong, and she has continued to learn and study through workshops with Kathy Jones, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, Ray Roberts, and Ken Auster. She is a member of the Laguna Plein Air Painting Association and the SoCal Plein Air Painting Association.
Her subjects include oceanscapes, landscapes, still lifes, and the figure. Connie does many of her works on location, but she also likes to paint in the studio. "I sometimes complete the painting on location, but other times I go to the studio and recreate the experience, the feelings and the vision. I don't always try to paint just what I see, rather I paint what I am feeling, what is evoked, and the results are often surprising and exciting to me."
